It was named in honour of German botanist and medical doctor Traugott Gerber (1710-1743) who travelled extensively in <a title=\"Russia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russia\">Russia<\/a> and was a friend of <a title=\"Carl Linnaeus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Linnaeus\">Carl Linnaeus<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><i>Gerbera<\/i> is native to tropical regions of <a title=\"South America\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_America\">South America<\/a>, <a title=\"Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Africa\">Africa<\/a> and <a title=\"Asia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asia\">Asia<\/a>. The first scientific description of a <i>Gerbera<\/i> was made by J.D. Hooker in <i><a title=\"Curtis's Botanical Magazine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis%27s_Botanical_Magazine\">Curtis&#8217;s Botanical Magazine<\/a><\/i> in 1889 when he described <i><a title=\"Gerbera jamesonii\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gerbera_jamesonii\">Gerbera jamesonii<\/a><\/i>, a <a title=\"South Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Africa\">South African<\/a> species also known as Transvaal daisy or Barberton daisy. <i>Gerbera<\/i> is also commonly known as the African daisy.<\/p>\n<p><i>Gerbera<\/i> species bear a large <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Head (botany)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Head_(botany)\">capitulum<\/a> with striking, two-lipped ray florets in yellow, orange, white, pink or red colours. The <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Head (botany)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Head_(botany)\">capitulum<\/a>, which has the appearance of a single <a title=\"Flower\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flower\">flower<\/a>, is actually composed of hundreds of individual <a title=\"Flower\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flower\">flowers<\/a>. Thousands of <a title=\"Cultivar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cultivar\">cultivars<\/a> exist. They vary greatly in shape and size. Colours include white, yellow, orange, red, and pink. The centre of the flower is sometimes black. Often the same flower can have <a title=\"Petal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petal\">petals<\/a> of several different colours.<\/p>\n<p><i>Gerbera<\/i> is also important commercially. It is the fifth most used cut flower in the world (after <a title=\"Rose\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rose\">rose<\/a>, <a title=\"Dianthus caryophyllus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dianthus_caryophyllus\">carnation<\/a>, <a title=\"Chrysanthemum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chrysanthemum\">chrysanthemum<\/a>, and <a title=\"Tulip\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tulip\">tulip<\/a>).
